Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Jacket Redesign
2023
In commemoration of the 47th year anniversary of the publication of Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, I made an updated version of the book’s jacket. It pulls from elements of the book’s written work, such as the colors red, yellow, and brown, the Black American spiritual the book features, and the cotton fields on the inner jacket, as well as the 2016 edition cover of the book, made by Kadir Nelson, through the girl’s silhouette. Incorporating these elements, I aimed to create a minimalistic-yet-modern look for the book that was both simple and intriguing and also denotes Black power, pride, and excellence.
Made with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. Not a commercially used cover; originally made for a school graphic design project. No money was or is made from the final product. All original rights belong to Penguin Random House. Fonts used include Carrotflower and Minion Pro Regular.
